Development of an Optimization-Based Atomistic-to-Continuum Coupling Method

چکیده
Atomistic-to-Continuum (AtC) coupling methods are a novel means of computing the properties of a discrete crystal structure, such as those containing defects, that combine the accuracy of an atomistic (fully discrete) model with the efficiency of a continuum model. In this note we extend the optimization-based AtC, formulated in [17] for linear, one-dimensional problems to multi-dimensional settings and arbitrary interatomic potentials. We conjecture optimal error estimates for the multidimensional AtC, outline an implementation procedure, and provide numerical results to corroborate the conjecture for a 1D LennardJones system with next-nearest neighbor interactions.

A Continuum Model For Stone-wales Defected Carbon Nanotubes
In this paper, a continuum model is proposed so that a Stone-Wales (SW) defected carbon nanotube (CNT) is replaced by an initial circumferential crack in a continuum cylindrical shell. For this purpose, the critical energy release rate and then the fracture toughness of a defected CNT are calculated using the results of an existing atomistic-based continuum finite element simulation. Finally, t...
متن کاملConsistent Energy-Based Atomistic/Continuum Coupling for Two-Body Potentials in Three Dimensions
Very few works exist to date on development of a consistent energy-based coupling of atomistic and continuum models of materials in more than one dimension. The difficulty in constructing such a coupling consists in defining a coupled energy whose minimizers are free from uncontrollable errors on the atomistic/continuum interface. In this paper a consistent coupling in three dimensions is propo...
متن کاملA Priori Error Analysis of Two Force-Based Atomistic/Continuum Hybrid Models of a Periodic Chain
The force-based quasicontinuum (QCF) approximation is a non-conservative atomistic/continuum hybrid model for the simulation of defects in crystals. We present an a priori error analysis of the QCF method, applied to a one-dimensional periodic chain, that is valid for an arbitrary interaction range, large deformations, and takes coarse-graining into account. Our main tool in this analysis is a ...
متن کاملConnecting Atomistic-to-Continuum Coupling and Domain Decomposition
Many atomistic/continuum coupling algorithms utilize an overlapping subdomain method, where boundary data for local solves in atomistic and discretized continuum subdomains is provided from local solves in neighboring subdomains. Such coupling algorithms are closely related to the classical alternating Schwarz domain decomposition method, although little to no convergence or error analysis exis...
